General Cosmetic Tattoo FAQ

1. Is Cosmetic Tattooing the same as body tattoos?

Yes! All tattoos are created by implanting pigment into the dermis for the purpose of beautification. The only variable is the thickness of the epidermis which differs on the body and face.

2. Is Cosmetic Tattooing painful?

There is some pain involved in all tattooing procedures. We apply a topic anesthetic during the procedure to help minimize the discomfort. The level of pain felt will depend on each individual’s pain threshold.

3. How permanent is Cosmetic Tattooing?

This is a very common question and one that is not easy to answer! Cosmetic tattoos generally last between 1-3 years however there have been cases where cosmetic tattoos have lasted for more than 20 years. So if you are considering a cosmetic tattoo under the misconception that it’s only temporary; then think again. The permanence of a cosmetic tattoo depends on many factors; individuals skin type, medical conditions, colors used, lifestyle, etc. Colours do fade over time, and we usually recommend a touch-up every 2-3 years.

4. Is Cosmetic Tattooing Safe?

At N&D safety and sanitation is a top priority! We use one time use disposables when possible and thoroughly disinfect and sanitize between each client with EPA recommend solutions. We seek out only sterile lab produced pigments that have gone rigorous testing for safety and reliability. After you walk out our door it is up to you the to take care of the treated area appropriately post treatment to ensure the area is kept sterile and clean.

5. I am very sensitive to makeup and have allergic reactions to mascara, eyeshadow and other makeup?

Cosmetic tattooing is made for you. Allergic reactions to pigment is almost unheard of, most reactions come from sensitivities to the numbing agents and post care products.

6. How do I choose a colour for my cosmetic tattoo?

At N&D we take color theory seriously. We evaluate your skin under tone and over tone to chose a color that will best meet you desired result. It is important that you are aware that colors do change once healed. The same color can be used on 20 individuals with all twenty resulting in different colours. This is due to the fact that many different things can affect the final colour. Client’s skin tones, medications and medical conditions, skin care product usage, sun exposure and other lifestyle choices will be a determining factor in the healed result. Also, keep in mind that immediately after the treatment the color will be brighter, bolder and a bit more extreme than the desired color. Up to 60% of pigment can be lost within the healing period. As the skin heals over the tattoo, the color will become softer and lighter. We recommend to wait at least 6 weeks before judging the color. Any color adjustments can be addressed in your refining session 10-12 weeks post treatment, if needed.

7. What should I consider prior to the procedure?

There are a few important factors to take into consideration prior to undergoing treatment. Please read carefully and should you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact us.

Cosmetic tattoos can last anything between one year to twenty plus years, dependent on the individuals skin and initial colors used. Color-boosts will be required over time. Certain products and procedures, such as acid based (glycolics and AHA’S) products, Retinal, Peels, Sun exposure and laser treatments can fade tattoos. Tattoos change and fade over time and it is impossible to predict if one will have considerable complications with the color.

If you suffer from cold sores (the herpes virus) you should be aware that often a lip procedure induces a re-occurrence. You must consult with your physician to receive a prescription for an antiviral. A breakout will result in loss of pigment in the affected area. Any adjustments are made at the 10-12 week refining session, if needed.

We do not, under any circumstance, tattoo any person who is pregnant or breastfeeding. No exceptions. We will be happy to schedule once you are through with your pregnancy and nursing journey.

If you suffer from medical conditions or are on any medication, it is important that you notify us prior to treatment. In some cases a letter from a GP will be required.

8. How long will my Cosmetic Tattoo take to heal?

Make sure the area that is going to be tattooed is healthy, hydrated and at its optimum best as this will ensure rapid healing with the least complications. Healing time differs in individuals. It can be anything from 4 days to 14 days. The majority of clients resume work the next day and manage to keep their tattoos discreet. Dependent on the area tattooed, redness, dryness and minor swelling can occur. Swelling usually subsides within a couple of hours (except in full lip treatments where it can take up to 24 hours). Itchiness is the first sign of healing, please ensure you do not scratch the area. Following the recommended post care instructions will ensure a speedy heal and favorable results.

9. I’m getting married or going on vacation, how far in advance should I schedule my appointment so I am healed for my event?

Your skin will be superficially healed in 10-14 days and normal makeup wear and daily activities can resume. It is recommended to avoid sun exposure for a minimum of 30 days. The sun fades the tattoo and as licensed skin therapists we recommend avoiding tanning altogether.

Eyebrow Tattooing FAQ

1. Is the eyebrow hair shaved off?

We do not shave off the eyebrow. We will use a small detail razor to remove excess hair around the shape to be tattooed. In rare instances we may shave off parts of the brow area. If the tattoo is in a slightly different place than the natural brow long term maintenance may be required for maintaining the new shape through waxing or tweezing. The situation varies by person and the artist will always discuss the options before tattooing.

2. How do I decide on a colour for my Eyebrow Cosmetic Tattoo?

We take your natural eyebrow hair, skin tones and eye color into consideration prior to recommendation.

3. How do I decide on a shape for my Eyebrow Cosmetic Tattoo?

This is our specialty! We custom design a unique brow for each of our guests. Your natural facial structure including your bone and how your muscles lay on said bone is the ultimate guide for us to design a one of a kind brow that compliments you naturally.

4. What will I look like immediately after Eyebrow Cosmetic Tattoo?

Eyebrows will immediately look more prominent, darker and more defined with a bit of swelling and redness. Swelling and redness will subside within a few hours post tattooing. The color will appear darker and stronger than the desired result due to oxidation. A scab is always bigger than the wound so they will look bigger until the scabs have flaked off.

5 . When can I go back to work and how long will it take to heal?

Most clients return to work the very next day, still managing to keep their eyebrow tattoo discreet! Eyebrow tattoos usually start to heal pretty quickly without any complications (within four days), they will completely heal within 6 weeks. It is important to stick to the aftercare instructions to ensure rapid healing.

Eyeliner Tattooing FAQ

1. Does eyeliner cosmetic tattoo hurt?

The pain threshold of each individual is different, but it is a sensitive area. Topical anaesthetic is used to help numb the pain.

2. I have eyelash extensions and/or use a lash growth serum, can I get my eyeliner tattooed?

No lash extensions. If you currently have extensions they must be removed by your lash tech prior to your appointment. If you are currently using Latisse or any growth serums please discontinue a minimum of 8 weeks prior to your appointment. Please do not wear eye makeup to your appointment if having eyeliner procedure.

3. What colours can I choose from for my eyeliner tattoo?

With eyeliner, we tend to recommend black, charcoal or brown. This depends on the individual; some people opt to choose a more vibrant color (e.g. green or blue). Just remember trends change and tattoos are permanent.

4. What will it look like immediately after treatment?

Immediately after a lash line or an eyeliner tattoo, eyes will be a little red, swollen and agitated (almost like hayfeverish eyes). The swelling will subside within a few hours; a cold pack can be used to aid relief of swelling.

5. When can I return to work and how long will it take to heal?

Eyeliner and lash line tattoos usually cause a little bit of swelling and redness. This usually subsides in a few hours and clients return to work the very next day. Daily care is essential to ensure the healing is at its optimum best, it generally takes 6 weeks for the eyes to completely heal.

6. When can I start wearing contacts and makeup again?

We advise no contacts or makeup for 5 days minimum post procedure. We always recommend a fresh set of contacts when resuming use. Cleaning your makeup brushes and starting a new tube of mascara is also a good idea.
